Development Journeys

Leadership – intentionally developmental journeys

Leadership begins on the inside. So does the shift we are waiting for in the world.

The leadership we need now asks for a shift in the inner place from which we operate — toward a more integral and whole approach to managing complexity. We develop leadership through self and with others, by creating sound cultures inside systems, and by shifting the inner landscape in order to effect a shift in the outer world.

Whole-sightedness  —  the hemispheres

circular-_edited.jpg

We can mention Iain McGilchrist's hemisphere hypothesis. The left hemisphere tends to fix, fragment, categorise and control. The right hemisphere sees the bigger picture, context, relationships, nuance — the living interconnectedness of systems. Leadership today often over-indexes on left-hemisphere traits: metrics, efficiency, short-term wins, control. McGilchrist argues — and we agree — for leadership that integrates detail with vision, privileging the right hemisphere's openness to complexity.

The metaphor he offers is the Master and the Emissary. The emissary (left) is meant to serve by providing detail, analysis and tools. The master (right) must set the direction by keeping the whole and the purpose in sight. In modernity, the emissary has usurped the master. The leadership we cultivate here is the slow work of restoring the rightful relationship.

IU takes this further to the realms of the globe. How the different hemispheres of the world have created a split of functioning that can be seen in the same way as McGilchrist’s message.  The western rational and colonial impulse has had profound impact on the way we use words, see ourselves, and governed the economy, social structures and political landscapes.  These too have to shift.  We do not see it in a way of re-creating polarisation and separations, but rather work with the idea of wholeness and inclusion of that which works, while letting go that which has not served.

IU also acknowledges that trauma lives in the body: the body of the individual, the family, the team, the community, the organisation, the nation and the land.  A whole systems approach considers all: the skill is to note where the acupuncture points lie and begin there.  Our offerings thus have a profoundly responsive methodology that supports this assessment which becomes the dialogue for change and growth that follows.

Four dimensions, eight domains

Our focus begins with inner leadership, and moves outward through four dimensions of experience — into action, into relationship with others, into the design of optimal systems, and into the making of environments in which people and organisations can thrive. We explore each dimension across eight domains, so the map meets the deeply personal and the organisational, urban and global.

The Leadership Maturity Profile

We work with the Leadership Maturity Profile (SCG), developed by Dr Susanne Cook Greuter with the work of Loevinger prior to her, has worked with the founders of LMai to offer a digital profile that offers people a potent insight into ‘how’ they think and what their capacity for complexity, holding polarities, and taking action is.

Paddy had worked side by side with Susanne for 18 years and this work, acknowledged as a construct of theory, nonetheless, provides extremely useful information with which every leader can work to cultivate deliberate practices of conscious and mature leadership.  The profile is the most scientifically validated approximation of the stage of complexity and maturity a leader is currently operating from. Combined with Integral Inquiry (a specialist interview process), it offers a marker of the journey that can be re-applied later to make growth visible and to inform tailored development.

Everything is urgent: we have to go slowly.
— Bayo Akamolafe

The Profile is used alongside the Enneagram, as a deep ontology and process work. We draw on leadership theory, systems theory, group dynamics, brain research, spiritual traditions, psychology, philosophy and organisational dynamics — integrated through the AQAL lens, Ubuntu, and Theory U — to co-create an intentional development plan for each leader. This integration transmitted through clear, pragmatic and manageable programmes that speak the language of meaning with which the learner can enter and grow with and from.

For our leadership development journeys from skills development, to transitional leadership to transformational leadership.
